1. Policy Statement
Learn Science Together is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people who access our tuition services. We expect all staff, tutors, volunteers, and contractors to share this commitment and to act responsibly to protect children from harm, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
This policy applies to all adults working with Learn Science Together, whether paid or voluntary, and sets out our approach to safeguarding and child protection.

3. Scope
This policy covers all children and young people (under 18 years) who receive tuition from Learn Science Together, whether in-person or online.

5. Key Roles and Responsibilities
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

The DSL is responsible for overseeing safeguarding concerns, providing advice and support to tutors, liaising with external agencies, and ensuring all safeguarding records are securely maintained.
The DSL must undertake recognised DSL training every two years and refresh knowledge annually.
Tutors and Staff
All tutors must complete Level 1 Safeguarding training before starting work.
Tutors must report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the DSL and follow reporting procedures.
Tutors must read and comply with this policy and other safeguarding-related policies.
6. Safeguarding Principles
The welfare of the child is paramount.
All children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation, or identity, have the right to equal protection from harm.
Working in partnership with families, schools, and other agencies is essential.
Staff and tutors must be alert to signs of abuse or neglect and act promptly.

8. Recognising and Responding to Concerns
What to Do if a Child Discloses Abuse
Listen carefully and stay calm.
Do not promise confidentiality; explain you may need to share the information.
Do not ask leading questions.
Record exactly what the child says and any visible signs.
Report immediately to the DSL.
Reporting Procedures
All concerns, suspicions, or disclosures must be reported promptly to the DSL.
Use the designated reporting form (available via the admin team).
The DSL will decide on next steps, including referral to children’s social care or the police.
9. Allegations Against Staff or Tutors
Any allegations against a tutor or staff member must be reported immediately to the DSL.
If the allegation involves the DSL, report to the relevant external authority.
Learn Science Together will follow statutory procedures and cooperate fully with investigations.
10. Online Safety
Tutors must follow online safety protocols during virtual tuition sessions.
Use only approved platforms and communicate via Learn Science Together accounts.
Report any online safeguarding concerns to the DSL immediately.
11. Confidentiality and Record Keeping
All safeguarding records are confidential and stored securely by the DSL.
Information will only be shared on a need-to-know basis, in line with GDPR and safeguarding protocols.
Records must be accurate, dated, and signed.
12. Training and Induction
All tutors must complete Level 1 Safeguarding training before starting.
The DSL must undertake accredited DSL training every two years.
Refresher training and policy updates will be provided annually.
Tutors must read the Safeguarding Policy, KCSIE Part 1, and complete the induction process.
13. Managing Student Behaviour and Wellbeing
Tutors should manage behaviour professionally and calmly.
Any significant issues or persistent concerns should be reported to the Tutor Support Lead.
Tutors should support student wellbeing and signpost where appropriate.
14. Monitoring and Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or following any significant safeguarding incidents or changes in legislation.
All staff and tutors will be informed of updates and required to re-acknowledge understanding.
